Maybe Every Other Day

Maybe Every Other Day

Well, isnt this all going perfectly to plan? "Every day!" I yodelled, gleefully. Completely aware, of course, that it would not happen. It was the blogging equivalent of a breezy "Ill call you!" on the way out of the door.

Yesterday I worked in the café, avoiding making lattes. The highlight was the new boy telling us that he and his girlfriend have just set up a band, with him on the ukulele and her singing Disney songs. We then all sung some Disney songs for a bit until we couldnt remember any more, then we stopped. Well, they stopped. I have been singing (and acting out) Part of Their World ever since. I enjoy pretending to float around the kitchen I can find picking up random objects, singing "you want thingamibobs? I got twennie!" to the cat. He looks at me with a look that seems to say that he has quite enough thingamibobs today, and will I stop being weird just for a bit? Unfortunately he knows the answer to that one.

Last night Ben and I went to the Bridgewater Hall to see Rokia Traoré, supported by Sweet Billy Pilgrim.

Sweet Billy Pilgrim are a four piece folk rock band, and they were great. For the first half of the first song I was uncertain, not quite sure where they were going to go. As they went on, though, they built up an incredible sound, swapping instruments unpretentiously and filling the hall with harmonies. It was the sort of sound that means that you dont have to listen too closely to the lyrics, but when I did they were beautiful as well. Also the keyboard player had a very impressive beard.

Rokia Traoré, though. Wow. Shes this tiny, muscular person, kind of frail and strong at the same time. She and the band walked on to applause, which faded as she stood in front of the microphone. The lights were down, and she just said an accented "thank you", then began to sing. Her voice was weird and mesmerizing, kind of fluttering and breathy. She sang in French, and when the band took over during the first song she jerked up her chin in time to their rhythm, a bit like a really musical rooster. I was captivated.

The rest of the show just kept hitting new heights. She wheeled around the stage, dancing and grinning, speaking very earnestly about Africa, paying tribute to South African singer Miriam Makeba. In her band was electric guitar, electric bass, drums, backing vocals and a guy on a wooden, stringed guitar-like instrument, which made for an interesting blend of sound. Her voice got bigger and more exciting, I completely loved it.

By the end of the gig, about half of the audience were out of their seats and dancing. The other half were sitting tensely wondering when it was going to be over so they could go and watch the rest of A Touch of Frost over a cup of chamomile tea. This, of course, is grossly unfair, although I am feeling mean about it due to the woman next to me who, from her seated position, sneered at my dancing for about ten minutes. It was disconcerting. Im glad we danced, though, because really it wasnt the sort of music to sit sedately to. (A few years ago we went to see The Buena Vista Social Club there [um, OMG] and a similar tentative dancing thing happened at the end. There are some gigs that just should be danced at.)

I enjoyed the enthusiastic couple at the front, though, who I bet have a flyer taped to their fridge that says "Spice Things Up With Salsa Lessons!".

Rokia and her backing vocalist danced at the end of the gig, and they were incredible. The energy filled the hall, which is impressive, as its bloody massive.

Right, enough. I have to go and VOTE! and then get on a train to Leeds to lead a choir rehearsal, then come back for a rift cuts writers meeting/workshop.

VOTE! first, though. I have to cast my vote into the winds of its all the same and cycle off knowing that by tomorrow well all probably be made to feel bit blue.

Modifier Requirements for Same Day Lab Tests

Modifier Requirements for Same Day Lab Tests

Some major payers, asking to use modifier 91 for CPT codes 80047-89398 when billing for more than one unit on a laboratory test for the same patient on the same day. For example, the modifier must be used when billing for repeat tests. Without the modifier, claims will be processed with only a single unit allowed and payments will be less than expected. Remittances will identify these payments with the Claim Adjustment Reason Code 97.

May Day Baskets for Friends!

May Day Baskets for Friends!

Here is Jens idea for May Day Baskets for friends. This wasnt a big tradition where I grew up, but Jen and my husband, Jared, remember taking cute baskets around the neighborhood as kids. They grew up in the Midwest. I think it is adorable. We will have to try it next year, I think the kids would love this tradition.

From Jen:
"Here is a picture of our May Day baskets we are going to take to our friends. I used a cup and punched a hole on both sides and used a pipe cleaner for the handle. I used my cricuit and cut out flowers and punched a hole in the middle and stuck a sucker throught the hole and then I used a green straw to make the stem longer."

May Day Facts:
Here are some fun May Day Facts that Jen compiled as well.

May Day (May 1st) is celebrated in many places around the world. The traditions and stories surrounding May Day vary from place to place. There is, however, one thing that is similar in most celebrations - the use of Flowers!

One of the most popularly known May Day traditions is to hang a basket full of spring flowers and/or other small gifts on a neighbors doorknob. The trick is you dont want the neighbor to see you! If you get caught, you are supposed to get a kiss.

A popular activity on May Day is to decorate a pole with brightly colored ribbon or paper streamers. Some also add flowers and balloons. The pole is usually carried in a parade and then placed in the ground at a designated area. People then dance around the May Pole, holding the ends of the streamers or ribbon in their hands.  Make your own tabletop May Pole here.

In London, May Day is celebrated with the children going from house to house. They bring flowers and get pennies in return. The pennies are then thrown into a wishing well. The pennies are then donated to charity.

In France, cows play an important role in May Day. The cows are led in parades with many flowers attached to their tails. The people watching the parade try to touch the cows; it is believed to be good luck.

In Germany, one tradition is for boys to secretly plant a May tree in front of the window of the girl they love.

On May 1st, people in Hawaii celebrate their own version of May Day; they call it Lei Day. People give Hawaiian leis to each other. They put them around each others necks and sometimes give a traditional kiss.

ENJOY!

COMEMORATING MEMORIAL DAY...
NEVER FORGET

Dear fellow #AvGeek,
A reminder that next week is Blogging in Formation week — a post every day from your favorite #aviation bloggers!  Next weeks theme: "My Most Memorable Flight."  My post, THE SKY FELL, will post Wednesday, June 5.

If you havent already done so, I encourage you to read the First in our series, "How I Was Brought to Flying," already posted!  Here are the links:

And now . . . .
Ladies and Gentlemen, in honor of our Nations Fallen, may I humbly present an Encore Presentation of one of my most popular blog posts ever...

FLYING A FALLEN HERO
Missing Man Formation.
Recently I experienced one of the greatest—and most heart-rending—honors a modern airline pilot can have:  Captaining a flight that is transporting a fallen soldier to his final resting place.

Escorting the hero was a military honor guard consisting of two of the soldier’s comrades, and two young Marines.  Also onboard were the man’s father and a lovely, devastated young woman—girlfriend? Wife? Sister?  I never found out.  I never learned the soldiers name, either.  Or his rank.  Or how or where he died.

But it didnt matter.  Because, like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, he was ours.  He was us.
Coming on the heels, as it was, of the Aurora movie theatre tragedy, this flight was particularly poignant for all passengers and crew as well.

Comrades and Honor Guard salute the Fallen...
...and then crisply march away...
As soon as our preflight duties were finished, I ordered the gate agents to allow the party onboard.  They were escorted down to the ramp, where they presided over a short ceremony as the casket was loaded into the forward cargo hold.  Simple, precise and crisp, the military detail saluted the casket then made a sharp about face to march away, reminding me of the Missing Man Formation often flown by jet fighters.*

The Missing Man pulls out of formation...
For six hours as we crossed the country, I contemplated my speech.  As Captain of the flight, I was expected to say a few words upon arrival.  At Top of Descent, I took a deep breath and keyed the PA:
“Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking.  I’d like you to pay special attention to this announcement.  (pause)  Today we have the great, great honor of escorting one of our fallen soldiers to his final resting place.
“Also on board, you may have noticed, is a military honor guard as well as family and loved ones of the deceased.  I would like to personally request that, upon arriving at the gate, out of respect for our fallen hero, you remain seated as the party deplanes to meet their loved one planeside.”
And for his loved ones, I saved the best for last.

“And to those of you worried about connections, I would like to say that we are arriving thirty minutes early.  That is because Air Traffic Control, aware of our status as an escort flight, cleared us ‘Direct to Destination’, in honor of our precious cargo.  (deep breath, trying desperately not to choke up)  Ladies and Gentlemen, in my 30-plus years  of flying, I have never witnessed such a gesture.”

It was true.  Despite pushing back from a major hub airport during rush hour, Ground Control cleared us straight to the runway, Tower immediately cleared us for takeoff, and Center direct to his final resting place.

It was my leg.  I am proud to say that, in honor of the fallen, I was able to make one of my smoothest-ever “greaser” landings, and rolled quietly down and off the runway to the gate.

The entire cabin was quiet and still as the solemn party proceeded off the plane.  I emerged from the cockpit just in time for the father to say to me, with tears in his eyes, a quiet, “Thank you.”
“It was an honor,” I replied.  “Take care, sir.”

God paints a gorgeous sunset to welcome the Fallen to his final resting place.
The party had another brief ceremony planeside as the coffin was loaded onto a specially-painted black tug and cart and driven off-airport.

Crew and Passengers mood: somber and reflective...
Needless to say, the mood among the crew was somber and reflective.  That was, until a small girl, no more than 4, marched up to the cockpit and loudly proclaimed, “Hi, pilots!  My name’s Gwennie!  But really my name’s Gwendolyn!”  Our hearts melted, putty in her charming little hands.

...And then a little passengers innocent joy breaks the somber mood...

And then it hit me.  That little girl.  So full of joy.  Of innocence.  Of life.  That’s why our hero had sacrificed his.

And it was not in vain.

"To fly West, my friend, is a flight we must all take for a final check."
—Author Unknown**

I did not have the honor of serving my country like my father, brother and nephew.  It is to them—and to our Fallen Hero and his loved ones—that I dedicate this piece.

Memorial Day one day late

Memorial Day one day late

If you know me at all, youll remember me talking of a memorial garden that displays any and all servicemens flags for the Memorial Day Weekend. And I told you that when BOTH of the boys were in Scouts, we would begin participating in the removal of the flags on Memorial Day. Yesterday, there were 2,379 flags flown in memory of fallen servicemen. Some dating back to WWI, others as recent as Desert Storm.

This is last years picture. They knew I was taking it.

And this is this years picture. They had no clue that I took this one until I had them printed at Wal-mart after the ceremonies.

Here they are actually folding a flag. The flags being flown for the first time are folded military style, while all others are folded laundry style. Volunteers at the garden launder, repair and store the flags for next year.

Memorial Day Dukemajian Park

Memorial Day Dukemajian Park

I was trying to explain to someone recently why simplified graphic iconography is SO important to good design and this is a good example. The scene in front of me was literally this (A)
But a better design is this (B)
And you cant see that unless you boil it down to the essential parts. All the "details" get in the way and must be striped off to refine the design cause without design were just human xerox machines. Copying whats in front of us with no thought. Even Ansel Adams knew that you MAKE a photograph not TAKE a photograph.
