May the Force Be With You
My mom should earn the title "Jedi Master" solely for this cake she made Jer for his birthday!!!
It started a few weeks ago when she called and told me she had an idea for a cake she could make him, if we were interested. "As long as its not very big, because there are only going to be about seven of us," I told her. Well, five and a half feet long is a long stretch (hehe) from not very big!!! It was only 4 inches wide though, so it evens out, right? I couldnt say no, I KNEW Jer would absolutely go nuts about this cake, so I accepted the offer!

She brought it over on Saturday before our few guests arrived. We were AMAZED!!! Jer would have picked it up and wielded it, slashing invisible enemies, had I not told him, "Fall victim to the dark side of the force you must not. Cake for eating. Restrain yourself you must." She has made many many awesome cakes before, but this one, I have to say it, takes the cake! I mean, who do you know that can make a cake that measures 5.5 feet long?!
OK... youve been waiting long enough for the pictures, so here they are!
(I had to tilt my camera to get the whole cake in the picture!)
It was the star of the party. A cake to remember! Awe-inspiring, and DELICIOUS to boot!

An issue came up today in our CI environment and I learned something new about maven profiles. Something that everyone who uses maven should know. Perhaps, like your environment, our project uses maven2 to build and we take advantage of multiple profiles (see our example here). A common use for profiles is to define new modules and properties. For example:
This profile is activated when you run mvn -P integration-tests install. But sometimes you want a profile on all the time. Maven profiles have the ability to be actived by default. To do this just do the following:<profiles><profile><id>integration-tests</id><modules><module>integration</module></modules><properties><app.port>8080</app.port></properties></profile>

Turns out that perhaps maven should have renamed it to activeByDefaultSometimes. Reading their documentation I learned something important about maven profiles:
"This profile will automatically be active for all builds unless another profile in the same pom is activated using one of the previously described methods. All profiles that are active by default are automatically deactivated when a profile in the pom is activated on the command line or through its activation config."So in my example, if I have more than one profile defined in my pom and I run that new profile, then my integration-tests profile is deactivated. For example, when I run mvn -P SecondProfile, the module and property defined in the integration-tests profiles are not available to my build. One trick to see which profiles are activated when running maven is to run mvn help:active-profiles.
In general I have never been a huge fan of profiles. They feel clumsy, clutter up the cmd line, and are not well known among your team. As their documentation states, "adding profiles to your build has the potential to break portability for your project". Instead of using Profiles, attach to known phases. For example, see my second example from this previous post. In this example, I use the maven-antrun-plugin to attach to the install phase. Now this will run anytime I run mvn install. No clumsy profile I have to memorize and run. Given that, I am not saying you should avoid Profiles all together. Just use them as a last resort.

Storyline
Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick. What Lou doesnt know is shes about to lose her job or that knowing whats coming is what keeps her sane. Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how hes going to put a stop to that. What Will doesnt know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of color. And neither of them knows theyre going to change each other for all time. Written by nattattck-11

I dont like sappy movies, but I really liked this sappy movie. Clarke wins again.Emelia Clarkes work on Game of Thrones is the only reason I watched this movie in the first place. She is occasionally transcendent in that role, where she must keep her eyebrows restrained, and I wanted to see what would happen if her amazingly mobile brows were set free ... free as her dragons.
There are a lot of solid things about this movie. The story (of a young woman who cares for a quadriplegic young man) is strong, the direction and cinematography good though not exceptional, the screen writing also good-not-exceptional, the supporting cast (especially Janet McTeer and Charles Dance)and leading man (Sam C.) quite good, and the emotional notes it hits, though all predictable and often a bit overwrought (cue swelling, heartwarming music...), ring true enough for an unabashed romance.
So, not really my type of movie. But I am happy to say that I was (almost) completely taken by Clarkes performance. Her character here is nothing like her GoT role, but is in many ways an equally fantasy-based role (but with clumsy shyness and striped leggings instead of fireproof skin and dragons) -- and Clarke manages to pull this character out of romantic fantasy into believability as effectively as she brings to life her role as Mother of Dragons. She has the combination of charisma, physical beauty, character-acting chops, and inner luminosity to pull a fairly nice, 7-of-10 heartwarmer up to a 9-of-10 charmer.

A nice little 3 hanky tear jerker with a very abominable messageIf the director of a movie has stirred an emotion in a viewer does that make it a good movie? I think yes because the viewer has been touched within and the story connected with that person, on some level. Unfortunately for Director: Thea Sharrock and Writer: Jojo Moyes the emotional connection for this viewer (me) was negative and borderline angry. But the movie is a good 6 or 7 stars worth to me because I found it well scripted, acted and photographed.
The plot is so British class oriented I was gritting my teeth. We have Will Traynor an upper crust society rich boy who is able to afford any indulgence he so desires. He lives in a mansion and owns an ancestral castle. Has had top line education and was a multi-talented sportsman and is exceptionally handsome. Mr upper crust Will is arrogant, self centered, and oh so superior. Then there is Lou Clark a working class former shop girl living in a small bungalow with her family. Her father is currently unemployed and cannot find a job. The family depends on Lous income to make ends meet. She looses her shop job and applies as a companion aide to the now disabled (quadriplegic) Will Traynor. His mother is so charmed by Miss shop girl Lous cheerful and quirky attitude she hires her. So theres the first problem - a working class person having to survive by being in service to an upper society family. What a good little Brit she is! And of course the Traynors feel its their duty to provide for the lower classes so they hire Lous father as a castle facility technician - read grounds keeper for the castle! Then there is the ever available Nathan who supplies the muscle to move Will from bed to chair and back, plus keep account of Wills borderline health. Its never explained how Nathan is always

Mid Year Assessment Time! You Can Do It!
Last week I gave the students the CBMR test, which is a fluency test done for FAST assessment from the Department of Education. Due to illnesses, students being gone, and the site being down, I have two or three yet to finish. Students read three different passages as fast as they could and their words per minute were averaged minus errors. I was extremely pleased how well everyone did and how much they have grown!!
Wednesday of this week, the 27th, students will take the AReading test. This is the comprehension and reading skills assessment part of the FAST testing. Again, this is for the Department of Education. This test is not timed and done on the laptops. Students are encouraged to try their very bests so that we can see how much they have grown since the beginning of school. The scores on this assessment help us determine which students need extra instruction through interventions.
Thursday, January 28th, we will be taking the MAPs math assessment. This test, if you remember, is done on the iPads and is not timed.
The last formal assessment we need to give is the MAPs reading test. Students in 3rd grade will take that next Tuesday.
Parents, please make sure your child gets enough rest and eats a great breakfast on these testing days. Do not stress over them as they are one picture of a childs education, but they are important. Just tell your child to do his/her best as that is all we ever ask.

Mobile app security testing are you checking for all the flaws
I plan to write a related post soon on my mobile app security assessments. In the meantime, I wanted to share a tool with you that plays a key role in mobile app security: Checkmarx CxDeveloper (or perhaps more appropriately called CxSuite).
If youre a developer, QA professional, security manager, or IT generalist, this is a good tool to have for all of those gotta-have-now apps that everyone is throwing together getting in the app stores.
Ive used CxDeveloper to find flaws in iOS and Android-based apps that may not be discovered via traditional testing such as:
- Code injection
- Session fixation
- Path traversal
- Weak passwords
- Hard-coded cryptographic keys
...all things that Im not smart enough to find on my own. Nor do I have the time.
For a few years now, Ive dealt with the folks at Checkmarx and everyone from their CTO to their Director of Marketing - and a few others in between - has been super nice and responsive to my sometimes ridiculous requests.
